Williamstown Prince Albert Hotel Suburban Icon Poster
Williamstown's maritime destiny has been intertwined with the ebb and flow of the tides. With the gold rush frenzy of the 1850s, the seaside town became a bustling hub where dreams of riches took shape.
By the 1860s, Williamstown had evolved into a vital seaport, beckoning sailors, contractors, gold seekers, and weary travellers alike. Amidst the salt-kissed sea breeze, the sale of liquor became an indispensable public service—a soothing balm to weathered souls. The Prince Albert Hotel stood as one jewel in the crown of the 27 hotels that graced this thriving coastal enclave.
However, fate is often as capricious as the winds that sweep across the waves. In 1914, a raging fire devoured the original weatherboard structure, reducing it to ashes. But from the ashes, a phoenix rose. Crafted for the Carlton and United Breweries, the stately building we see today was conceived by the prolific hotel architects Sydney Smith and Ogg.
Today, the Prince Albert stands as a living tribute to Williamstown's enduring community spirit. At Suburban Icons Posters, we give a hearty toast to the timeless legacy of locals and wanderers alike. Cheers to the Prince Albert, where history meets camaraderie in every pour!
