Williamstown Timeball Tower Suburban Icon Poster

from A$50.00

Sailors approaching the coastal haven of Williamstown knew that their journey hinged on precise timekeeping. And on the shores of the quaint seaside town, a beacon of timekeeping innovation stood tall—the Timeball Tower. Like a symphony conductor, the Timeball Tower took centre stage, orchestrating a daily spectacle at the stroke of 1.00pm.

Constructed in 1849, this magnificent tower in Williamstown was a testament to ingenuity. Crafted from local bluestone, it began its life as a lighthouse, guiding ships through treacherous waters. But it was in 1861, and for the next six decades, this tower faithfully descended its ball each day, synchronising the chronometers of passing vessels. In 1926, the Timeball fell silent. By then, most ships had embraced wireless communication for their time signals.

Today, working Timeball towers are a rare breed. Apart from the one that graces Williamstown, only a handful remain scattered across the globe.

Time marches forward, but history lingers. The Timeball Tower, a jewel of historic Williamstown, stands as a sentinel of maritime heritage. With our iconic Suburban Icons Poster, you can immortalise this piece of history, a tribute to the unwavering pulse of time that once guided the intrepid sailors of yore.

This artwork is available in A0, A1, A2, A3, A4, as well as the ever popular Postcard. Professional framing is available on A0, A1 and A2 sizes via pick up only.
