This poster showcases the iconic Sun neon sign, a well-known landmark and symbol of Yarraville, renowned for its historic cinema and captivating Art Deco style.
The Sun Theatre, in the heart of Yarraville, first opened in 1938 as a single-screen cinema, boasting 1050 seats. On Saturdays, cinema-going crowds were so massive, the staff were almost overwhelmed!
During the 1950’s, television had caused the crowds to dwindle. As the Yarraville community's demographics changed in the 1960s, the Sun became a Greek cinema. Eventually, the once-grand theatre was closed by the health department for its unsanitary carpets!
In 1995, the iconic building found new owners who vowed that the Sun would rise again. It was no easy task. The past two decades saw it decay into a derelict husk. It had become a breeding ground for rodents and ants, its once-plush seats ruined by a leaky plaster ceiling, and much of the original Art Deco features had been plundered.
Today, the Art Deco masterpiece has been transformed into 8 boutique cinemas showing films from the latest Hollywood Blockbusters, innovative Australia cinema, and art films from around the world.

Sun Theatre History
The Sun Theatre in Yarraville, Melbourne, is a historic cinema designed by Cowper, Murphy and Appleford Architects and built by Hansen and Yunken (which is still in business today) for £25,000. The cinema first opened its doors in 1938 as a single-screen theatre, and has since undergone major renovations in 1995 to restore its Art Deco charm, complete with ornate plasterwork and vintage fittings. The Sun Theatre is known for its mix of mainstream Hollywood releases, independent films, and classic movies, as well as hosting special events such as Q&A sessions with filmmakers and themed movie nights. The Sun neon sign, featuring the bold and capital letters spelling out "Sun," has become an icon of Yarraville, serving as a recognizable landmark and popular attraction for visitors to the area.
