Yarraville's Former State Savings Bank Suburban Icon Poster

from A$50.00

In 1909, Melbourne architects Sydney Smith and Ogg designed an iconic Art Nouveau-inspired building in Yarraville for the State Savings Bank Victoria, at a cost of £1,966. Notably, they collaborated with the renowned architect Robert Haddon, who had recently published 'Australian Architecture' in 1908, advocating a unified architectural style for the nation.

The Yarraville branch of the State Savings Bank showcases a captivating blend of Art Nouveau and Romanesque influences. It boasts multi-faceted rectilinear columns on both levels and Romanesque rounded-arch windows adorned with intricate floral and natural motifs, creating a timeless vintage suburban icon in Yarraville. You’ll also note the Williamstown Prince Albert Hotel is also from the same architect firm and holds similar Art Nouveau characteristics.
